Smith, Roy and Lawless Make VGK Experience Special for Matthew
At an autograph signing session on Feb. 27, Vegas Golden Knights forward Reilly Smith and team broadcaster Gary Lawless sat together meeting fans, shaking hands, signing autographs and taking photos. Then, 6-year-old Matthew stepped up.
Lawless asked Matthew who his favorite hockey player was. He replied: Nicolas Roy. Lawless smiled and told Matthew that Roy would score a goal when the team played the Buffalo Sabres the next night at T-Mobile Arena. Smith overheard the conversation and said “what about me?” to which Lawless replied: “don’t worry, you’ll score two goals.”
Fast forward to T-Mobile Arena where the Golden Knights are in action against Buffalo and Matthew is enjoying his first game with his family.
In the first period, Roy scored a goal just like Lawless said he would.
In the third period, Smith scored a wraparound goal and added a late empty-net goal to make Lawless’ prediction come true.
On the radio, Lawless recounted the story and called for Matthew to take a bow after the last goal. The next day, Lawless connected with Matthew’s family to bring them to City National Arena for a practice.
After meeting up with Lawless, Matthew got to meet his two favorite Golden Knights: Nicolas Roy and Reilly Smith.
It’s safe to say that Roy, Smith and Lawless now have a lifelong fan in Matthew!
