#VGKWorldwide November Fan of the Month
New Zealand may not typically be known for its rich hockey history, but that doesn’t ever stop VGK Worldwide fans from watching their favorite team.
Joel, who was born and raised in New Zealand, currently lives in a town called Whakatane. He and his family discovered the Golden Knights while visiting Las Vegas amid the inaugural season Stanley Cup Playoff run.
“We didn’t make it to a game but watched the games on TV inside the Cosmopolitan,” said Joel. “We loved the hype and atmosphere around the town at the time. We also appreciated the way they jumped in to support the community after the tragedy on October 1.”
Joel has been a passionate fan ever since and became a VGK Worldwide member as soon as the initiative was first announced this past April.
“We wanted to be proud fans from New Zealand and show our support to the team anyway we can,” he said. “I thought joining would be a great way to meet other fans and be part of the VGK community. Through VGK Worldwide we even met another fan in Las Vegas during our last trip.”
From the start Joel’s favorite player has been William Karlsson, while his 4-year-old daughter loves Marc-Andre Fleury. He attended his first VGK game last season and returned to Vegas in September for a preseason contest vs. Arizona.
Despite the significant time difference, Joel and his family watch nearly every game along with friends.
“It takes us about 20 hours with all the travel to get there, but we’ll use any excuse we can to come back.”
